Volleyball's offense comes alive with wins at NACC/IIAC Invitational

WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. – Concordia University Wisconsin's offense struggled at times during the season so far, but on Friday night it erupted for non-conference wins over Central College 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-22) and Buena Vista University 3-2 (25-9, 23-25, 25-14, 19-25, 15-10) at the NACC/IIAC Invitational.

The Falcons had six players record double-figure kills and the team posted a .354 hitting percentage in the two matches combined. They smashed 112 kills in nine sets (12.4 average) and held their two opponents to a .169 attack percentage.

Junior Hannah Griffiths (Antigo, Wis.) led CUW with 28 kills, while junior Britta Duchow (Potter, Wis.) had 24 kills and a team-high .478 attack percentage on 46 attempts. Senior Ashley Faber (Kewaskum, Wis.) and sophomore Jessica Eggebrecht (Napoleon, Ohio) each had 16 kills.

Freshman Karina Klotz (Hubertus, Wis.) and junior Carley Valentine (De Pere, Wis.) recorded 56 and 35 assists, respectively.

Defensively, sophomore Kelsey Paramore (Tomahawk, Wis.) dug 30 attack attempts and junior Erin Howard (Labadie, Mo.) finished with 27 digs. Duchow and junior Gabrielle VanBeaver (Green Bay, Wis.) each had six total blocks.

Match One: CUW 3, CC 1

CUW hit .318 in the match and had a .538 attack percentage in the third set. Duchow led the Falcons with 12 kills, while eight players smashed a kill in the win over the Dutch. Klotz and Valentine directed the offense for a combined 42 assists.

Four players recorded double-digit digs, led by Klotz's 14 digs.

Hannah Welter led the Dutch with 13 kills and Sara Snead posted 10 kills. CC finished with a .244 attack percentage in the loss. Claire Stewart recorded a match-high 58 assists. Nicole Ewoldt led all players with 19 digs.

Match Two: CUW 3, BVU 2

The Falcons won their second five-set match of the season after hitting a season-high .387 at the net. They recorded at least a .348 attack percentage in four of the five sets played.

Duchow finished with a team-best 12 kills and CUW (6-11) had 62 kills in the win – its second 60-plus kill match this season. Klotz led the team with a career-high 34 assists, while Paramore and Howard each finished with 17 digs. VanBeaver recorded six total blocks.

Chelsea Clayton led the Beavers with 13 kills and Jordan Leehy had a match-high 39 assists. Four players finished with double-figure kills and were led by Leehy's 16 digs.

CUW held BVU to a .106 attack percentage.

CUW returns to the court on Saturday for matches against Luther College and Simpson College starting at 12 p.m. at JustAGame Fieldhouse.
