MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Women's Tennis team defeated Alverno College by an 8-1 score in a non-conference matchup Thursday afternoon at the CUW Softball Field.
The Falcons and Inferno, who are both members of the NACC, were playing a non-conference match on Thursday. Both teams qualified for the upcoming NACC Tournament due to their league records in the fall season, with the Falcons finishing second and Alverno placing sixth.
On Thursday CUW began by sweeping all three doubles matches. The No. 3 team of freshmen Sabine Jacobsen (Palatine, Ill.) and Anna Shanks (Kingsford, Mich.) had the biggest margin of victory in doubles play, rolling to an 8-0 win.
The No. 1 duo senior Emily McCormick (Waukesha, Wis.) and sophomore Michaela Wagner (Oswego, Ill.) netted an 8-4 win, while the No. 2 pairing of freshman Hannah Tresedder (Kingsford, Mich.) and sophomore Alisia Macioch (South St. Paul, Minn.) gained an 8-1 victory.
In singles play the Falcons won five of six matches, all in straight sets, to complete the 8-1 win. McCormick started the run at No. 2 singles with a 6-2, 6-3 win, while Jacobsen rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles. Wagner posted an identical 6-1, 6-1 score in the No. 4 singles position and sophomore Jessica Sapp (Memphis, Mich.) posted a 6-4, 6-0 score at No. 5. Rounding out the Falcons singles lineup at No. 6 was Macioch who gained a 6-2, 6-4 victory.
The lone Alverno win of the day came at No. 1 singles as the NACC Freshman of the Year Asia Butler-Yeo picked up a straight sets victory for the Inferno.
The Falcons (12-9) will be back in action next Wednesday when they host Carroll University at the CUW Tennis Courts. The match between CUW and the Pioneers is set for a 4 p.m. start.
