Women's Tennis drops heartbreaking season finale to NAC rival

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Both teams knew it was going to be a battle on Tuesday afternoon at Hart Park before Wisconsin Lutheran College edged out Concordia University Wisconsin, 5-4, in Northern Athletics Conference action.

The senior combination of Julie Spransy (Brown Deer, Wis.) and Jaclyn Ward (Franklin, Wis.) controlled their doubles match with an 8-3 victory to finish the regular season a perfect 7-0. Only twice during the season had the duo allowed an opponent to win at least four games against them.

"This was a very exciting match to coach," head coach Steven Anschutz said. "This match will provide us the most information in what to improve and work on in practice. Congratulations to all the women for having a successful season and playing hard every match."

Senior Callie Reinke (West Allis, Wis.) and junior Kristine Weber (Rochester Hills, Mich.) also won their doubles match, 8-2, which gave the Falcons (9-2, 9-2 NAC) a 2-1 lead after doubles play.

Singles play was exciting to say the least. Ward and freshman Ashley Knoll (Wilmot, Wis.) had to go the distance against their Warrior opponents, but fell 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 and 6-7, 6-1, 6-4, respectively. WLC (9-3, 8-1 NAC) took matches at No. 1, 2, 4 and 5 singles.

Reinke and sophomore Emily McCormimck (Waukesha, Wis.) captured victories during their singles matches with 6-2, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-0 wins, respectively.

CUW will wait for the remaining NAC schools to complete their regular season before it finds out what place it will have for the conference tournament, which begins on Apr. 29, 2013.
