HANCOCK, Mich. – Two late second period goals proved to be enough for Finlandia University as they held on for a 3-2 win over Concordia University Wisconsin Saturday afternoon.
CUW held a 2-1 advantage with five minutes remaining in the second, but the Lions would get hot, scoring a pair of goals and taking a one-goal edge into the third period. Finlandia then got defensive over the final 20 minutes, limiting CUW to just four shots to hold on for their first win of the season.
Lindsey Jackman scored the game-winner for the Lions, which came with 1:14 remaining in the third period. That goal came 3:18 after Siera Hache tied the score at 2-2.
The opening period was played to a 1-1 tie despite CUW holding a 14-2 edge in shots on goal. Bailey Raffaelli gave FU a 1-0 lead at the 11:14 mark but sophomore Chelsea Regan (Oakdale, Minn.) tied the score at 1-1 with just 1:25 remaining before the first intermission. Freshman Brittany Sticha (Lonsdale, Minn.) assisted on Regan's power play goal.
Senior Maxine Blohowiak (Green Bay, Wis.) then gave the Falcons a 2-1 lead 2:57 into the second on her third goal of the season. Freshman Baylee Darling (Holmen, Wis.) was credited with an assist on the second Falcon goal, which held until the late second period charge from the Lions.
Junior Jennifer DeGeorge (Waukesha, Wis.) made 18 saves for the Falcons in the contest. CUW outshot Finlandia by a 34-21 count, but winning goaltender Taylor Gustafson was strong between the pipes, making 32 saves.
CUW (6-14-1, 4-9-1 NCHA) will look to snap its current 11-game winless streak next weekend when they host Marian University in a weekend series. The Falcons will play their final four games of the regular season at the Ozaukee Ice Center, beginning with a 7 p.m. contest next Friday against the Sabres.
