Softball drops two on final day of Florida trip

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Softball team dropped its final two games of its Florida trip with losses against UW-River Falls and Worcester St. Thursday afternoon. The Falcons went 5-5 on their spring trip, bringing their overall record to 7-7 this season.

In the second game against the Lancers, CUW fell in extra innings on a walkoff in the eighth. WSU scored its unearned run in the eighth on an RBI single from Corrie Derosier, plating Kayla Humphrey for the winning run.

CUW trailed 2-0 entering the top of the sixth inning but tied the game on a two-RBI double from freshman Jamie Reiser (Ingleside, Ill.). Reiser's game-tying double plated freshmen Christine Sharon (Cornell, Mich.) and Andrea Thiry (Green Bay, Wis.).

The Falcons offense couldn't muster up much of anything else against the Lancers as they were held to four hits. Three of the four hits were doubles as sophomores Alexis Holsten (Oshkosh, Wis.) and Nicole Bublitz (Brown Deer, Wis.) joined Reiser with extra-base hits.

Freshman Emily Brekke (Waterford, Wis.) was the pitcher of record for CUW in the second game, throwing 2.1 innings of relief. She gave up the one unearned run, while allowing three hits and striking out one. Sharon got the start for CUW and threw five innings, allowing two earned with three punchouts. Sharon did not issue a walk in her time in the circle.

Kayla Humphrey went the distance for WSU, throwing eight innings and allowing two runs. She scattered four hits and struck out two. Three Lancers players had two hits, while four recorded doubles in the contest.

Against UW-River Falls, CUW trailed 3-2 entering the fifth inning when both offenses got rolling. Each team plated four runs in the frame, making the score 7-6 after five complete. UWRF would tack on a pair of insurance runs in the seventh, gaining the 9-6 victory.

Reiser was a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish for CUW in game two with a team-high three RBI. Holsten added two hits, including a two-RBI single in the four-run fifth. CUW finished the opener with 10 hits, all singles.

Katie Thompson paced the UWRF attack as she went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a two-run roundtripper in the fifth inning. All run-scoring plays in the fifth were on extra base hits for UWRF, including an RBI triple off the bat of Brooke Lauritzen. Amber O'Connell added two hits and three RBI for UW-River Falls.

Junior Melissa Perkins (Park Forest, Ill.) got the start for CUW and was the pitcher of record, throwing 4.2 innings. Brekke came on in relief and pitched the final 2.1 innings, allowing two unearned runs.

Lauritzen got the win for UWRF, pitching 5.2 innings with three strikeouts. She allowed two runs, while Abbie Morris earned the save, pitching the seventh, striking out one.
