CLERMONT, Fla. – The Concordia University Wisconsin softball team rebounded for a 4-1 win over Lake Forest College to split its opening day of games on the team's spring trip to Florida. The Falcons opened the day with a 4-0 setback against TCNJ.
The game two win marked the first loss of the season for Lake Forest, who was finishing its spring trip Saturday. The Foresters were 9-0 in Florida before taking on the Falcons.
Freshman Christine Sharon (Cornell, Mich.) was impressive in her first collegiate start in the circle against Lake Forest. The rookie did now yield a hit in 5.1 innings, while striking out two batters and walking three.
Sharon did find trouble in the sixth inning as the Foresters loaded the bases with just one out. Junior Melissa Perkins (Park Forest, Ill.) came on and escaped the jam to keep the CUW lead at 4-0. Perkins would give up an unearned run in the seventh in earning her first save of the season.
The CUW offense put up one run in the third, two in the fourth and one more in the fifth to build a 4-0 lead against LFC. Freshman Sadie Strasser (Gladstone, Mich.) bunted in freshman Jamie Reiser (Ingleside, Ill.) in the third to give the Falcons a 1-0 advantage. Reiser then had an RBI double in the fourth, while sophomore Alexis Holsten (Oshkosh, Wis.) doubled in freshman Madisen DeSmith (South St. Paul, Minn.) in the fifth.
In the opening game the CUW bats were silenced by Sam Platt of TCNJ. Platt went the distance, allowing just two hits, while walking a pair. She finished with four strikeouts in the shutout.
Perkins got the ball for the Falcons and also turned in a complete game effort. She struck out a pair while issuing three earned runs. Strasser and Sharon finished with the hits for the Falcons.
CUW will be back in action tomorrow with two more games. The Falcons will take on Ripon at 1 p.m. EST and will follow that game with a matchup against Smith.
