Men's Track & Field squad earns share of NAC title

RIVER FOREST, Ill . -- Concordia University Wisconsin and Benedictine University finished in a dead heat for the Northern Athletics Conference men's track & field title today with 135 points each, while Aurora University was a close third with 127 points. CUW senior Alex Pawlak was named Track Athlete of the Year for his record-setting three medal-winning performances.

Pawlak (Colgate, Wis.) won the 110-high hurdles in a NAC record time of 14.73 seconds, the 400-hurdles in a conference record 42.09 seconds and was part of CUW's first place 4x100 team. Senior Justin Rogers (Milwaukee, Wis.), also part of the 4x100 squad, finished second in the triple jump and was also runner-up in the 100-meter with a time of 10.85.

"We had a very good season as a program," said head coach Russ DeLap. "We won the men's indoor and outdoor 2012 NAC championships and our women's team finished second and fourth. There's a lot to be proud of."

Other Top Falcon Performance Highlights:

CUW's freshman Farrah Brown (Franklin, Wis.) won the pole vault, breaking the conference mark with a 3.18 meter vault in the process. Sophomore Kristin Sitte (Greenfield, Wis.) set a CUW 100-high hurdles record with a 16.71 time.

Other major point contributors:

Junior Kevin Gries (Cleveland, Wis.) was second in the 10,000-meters and fourth in the 5000-meters. Sophomore Martin Hinze (Bourbonnais, Ill.) was second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

"We had so many highlights," said DeLap. I'll forget some people, but here goes... Jessica Hennig had personal bests in the pole vault 9 feet, 400 – 1:01.5, 400 hurdles – 1:01. Lauren Frisque had a strong 400. Kelsey Wagner had a personal best 5:07 in the 1500 meter run. Jordan Watson had personal bests in the shot put – 11.30 and discus 32.29. Jasmin Bowers had a personal best in the 200 of a 30.30. Andrea Kassees set personal records in the Hammer throw 37.36 and discus 36.64. Dylan Krivoshein hit personal records in the 100 – 11.3 and 200 – 23.6. Michael Edwards ran personal best in the 400 with a 52.47 . Joel Behl had personal bests in the hammer-36.80 and hammer – 38.66. Holly Beattie threw personal bests in the discus 27.50, hammer 34.00 and shot put 10.26. Bethany Doerr ran to a personal best 42.16 in the 10,000 meter run. Mark Savard hit personal bests in the 100 – 11.7, 200 -24.21 and long jump 5.47. Courtney Gilge threw personal bests in the discus and hammer. Who did I forget?"

"This is a testament of their commitment and hard work all year long. We are a very young program. With some good recruiting the next year or two we should keep building on this year's success. The track & field program had so many excellent performances throughout the year it is exciting to think about the future.," the veteran coach concluded.

Falcons ranked Nationally at the NCAA Division III level:

Justin Rogers 24th in the triple jump with a distance of 46' 11.5".

4x100-meter relay of Sean Pawlak, Jonny Balsman, Alex Pawlak, Justin Rogers rank 36th with a time of 42.09.

Alex Pawlak is 18th in 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.73 and 31st in 400-meter hurdles with a 54.32 time.

Vincent Greefkes is 46th nationally in the 110-meter hurdles with a 15.04 time.
