Men's Tennis clinches NACC Tournament berth, defeats Wisconsin Lutheran

NEW BERLIN, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Tennis team snapped a two-match losing streak with a 7-2 win over Wisconsin Lutheran College Wednesday night at the Princeton Club. The win clinched a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament berth for the Falcons.

CUW began the night by sweeping the Warriors in doubles play. Seniors Russell Johnson (Monticello, Minn.) and Skip Turner (Eau Claire, Wis.) started the trend with an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles.

Also winning in doubles play for the Falcons was the No. 2 duo of junior Benjamin Nommensen (Waupaca, Wis.) and senior Garrett Wells (Aurora, Ill.). Nommensen and Wells edged their opponents, 9-7, while junior Steven Fritz (Berwyn, Ill.) and senior Tanner Hahn (Reedsburg, Wis.) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-2 win at the No. 3 spot.

Singles play saw several close matches, four of which went to a third and deciding set. The Falcons were able to win three of those four, including a No. 2 singles victory by Turner. He took his first set 7-6, before falling in set number two, 0-6. Turner then rebounded for a 7-5, set-three win to pick up the key victory.

Junior Robert Spiering (Wauwatosa, Wis.) and Fritz also won in three sets at No. 5 and 6 singles, respectively. Both players dropped the opening set before rallying for the win. Spiering took his match 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, while Fritz gained a 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 win. Also winning in singles play for the Falcons was Nommensen at the No. 3 position, 6-3, 6-4.

Wisconsin Lutheran (8-9, 5-2 NACC) would gain a three-set win at No. 1 singles and also picked up a No. 4 singles victory.

CUW (10-12, 5-2 NACC) will conclude its regular season schedule Saturday with a pair of home matches at the Kohler Sports Core. CUW will host both Dominican University and Concordia University Chicago.
