Johnson named NAC Men's Tennis Player of the Year

WAUKESHA, Wis. – Junior Russell Johnson of the Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Tennis team has been named the Northern Athletics Conference Player of the Year as the league released its 2013 season awards Thursday morning.

CUW won two of the three major awards after capturing a third straight NAC title this season. In addition to the Johnson accolade, the Falcons head coach Tom Weber was chosen as NAC Coach of the Year for the fourth time in the seven-year history of the league.

Johnson was joined by three other Falcons on the All-NAC Team as junior Skip Turner (Eau Claire, Wis.) and senior Taylor Shaffer (Stoughton, Wis.) were also selected. Turner and Shaffer, the Falcons No. 1 doubles team, and Johnson and freshman Terry Jones (Maywood, Ill.), the No. 2 doubles team, were two of six teams chosen for the All-NAC Doubles Team.

Johnson (Monticello, Wis.) went 19-6 during the regular season, including posting a perfect 9-0 mark at No. 1 singles in conference play. He was named the NAC Student-Athlete of the Week three times and his placement on the All-NAC Team was his third consecutive.

Turner finished the conference season with a 7-1 record at No. 2 singles for CUW. Like Johnson, this was his third straight selection to the All-NAC Singles Team. Shaffer made a second straight appearance on the team as he finished with a 6-0 mark in No. 3 singles matches in conference play.

The duo of Turner and Shaffer played together at No. 1 doubles in seven conference matches this season and won four of those to earn All-NAC Doubles Team honors. Johnson and Jones were also solid at No. 2 doubles, going 5-0 at that position in NAC matches played together.

The four All-NAC Falcons will lead their team in the conference tournament this Saturday at the Kohler Sports Core. CUW is the No. 1 seed after going 9-0 in conference play this season. The Falcons will take on fifth-seeded Edgewood in the semifinals at 12 p.m. and the winner of that match will play later in the afternoon in the championship match against either No. 2 MSOE or No. 3 Aurora.
