MEQUON, Wis. – Playing outdoors for the first time in conference play this season the Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Tennis team remained perfect in the Northern Athletics Conference with a 7-2 win over MSOE Friday afternoon at the North Shore Country Club.
With the win CUW (11-9, 7-0 NAC) clinched a bye in the six-team NAC Tournament, which is scheduled to begin next week as the Falcons will be at least the No. 1 or No. 2 seed. The Falcons won five of six singles matches and two of three in doubles play.
At No. 1 singles junior Russell Johnson (Monticello, Wis.) cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory, while junior Skip Turner (Eau Claire, Wis.) followed suit with a 6-4, 7-6 win in the No. 2 singles spot. Senior Taylor Shaffer (Stoughton, Wis.) won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, while Antoine Leon (Draveil, Essonne, France) cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles.
MSOE (6-11, 5-2 NAC) got its lone singles win at No. 5 but the Falcons were able to gain a win at No. 6 singles when freshman Terry Jones (Maywood, Ill.) defeated his counterpart, 7-5, 6-1.
In doubles play the Falcons were able to net wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles spot. In the top spot Turner and Shaffer edged out an 8-6 victory, while Johnson and Jones had little trouble gaining an 8-1 victory from the No. 2 position. MSOE would win the remaining doubles match, 8-6.
CUW will try and complete a perfect NAC regular season tomorrow when they play a pair of dual matches. The Falcons will take on Dominican University at 10 a.m. before playing against Concordia University Chicago at 2 p.m.
