MEQUON, Wis. – With the clock winding down in the first overtime session, Dominican University scored as the buzzer sounded to defeat the Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Soccer team 2-1 in overtime Saturday at Fitting Field. The match was the NACC opener for both teams.

With just seconds remaining CUW was called for a foul just outside the 18-yard box, allowing a Dominican free kick with about five seconds remaining and the clock winding down. Zach Venzon took the free kick and found Eli Sherman for the game-winning goal.

Both teams waited as the officials determined if the goal beat the buzzer or not. The play was extremely close and the officials awarded the goal for the Stars, continuing the Falcons unlucky stretch in overtime this season. CUW has now lost four of its first eight matches in overtime.

The Falcons built a 1-0 lead in the first half on a free kick from senior Diego Campos (Milwaukee, Wis.). Campos was just outside the 18-yard box and placed the ball beautifully in the top right corner, giving the Falcons a lead with 1:07 remaining in the half. The Stars wall of defenders appeared to block goalkeeper Gabriel Gongora as he did not even move on the play and the perfect shot from Campos was executed for his first goal of the season.

The CUW lead would hold until there was six minutes remaining on the clock in regulation as Dominican evened the score on a goal from Sonny Saiz. Gabriel Garcia took a corner kick and placed it well enough for Saiz to come in with the header, helping the Stars send the match to overtime.

DU (3-3-2, 1-0-0 NACC), the reigning eight-time NACC champion, finished the match with a 12-6 edge in shots as scoring chances were hard to come by for both teams. The Falcons had a 5-3 advantage in the first 45 minutes but DU would control the final 54:59, holding a 9-1 edge in the second half and overtime. The Falcons Keegan Van Dusseldorp (Burlington, Wis.) led all players with three shots.

Junior Alec Brew (Appleton, Wis.) made two saves for the Falcons, while playing the entire contest. Zach Watson was the goalie of record for DU, playing the second half and overtime as he picked up his first win of the season.

CUW (2-6-0, 0-1-0) will look to get back on track with a NACC road contest Tuesday against Lakeland. The Falcons and Muskies are set for a 4 p.m. start in Sheboygan, Wis.
