Two Baseball seniors collect All-Region honors

Seniors Matt Schubert and Bryan Thomas were named to the 2017 All-Midwest Region Second Team as the site announced its All-Region teams Tuesday morning.

Schubert and Thomas continue to collect postseason awards after leading the Falcons to a program-best 28 wins in 2017. The two seniors were both named First Team All-NACC after outstanding final seasons. The two are believed to be the first All-Region players for CUW, although the Falcons have produced All-Region players recognized by other organizations.

Schubert (West Bend, Wis.) was chosen as the Second Team utility player as he served as the team's starting shortstop and one of the Falcons starting pitchers as well. In conference games this season, Schubert hit .475 while finishing the regular season with a .374 average. He set the Falcons single-season record for most doubles with 20 and ranked fourth nationally in doubles when the Falcons season came to an end. The senior also scored a team-leading 50 runs and drove in 39.

As a pitcher, Schubert served as one of the Falcons weekend starters. He made seven starts on the mound and posted a 4-1 record. The right-hander finished the year with a 3.57 ERA over 45.1 innings of work.

Thomas (Lowell, Ind.) was one of the top hitters in the region this season, batting .422 which ranked 34th nationally when the Falcons season concluded. Thomas was also the top run producer in the Falcons lineup, ranking 13th nationally in RBIs (53). The senior collected 22 extra-base hits, doubling 15 times and adding four triples and three home runs.

At the conclusion of the regular season, Thomas led the NACC in two of three triple crown categories, batting average and RBIs. He finished the year with a .497 on-base percentage and scored 36 runs. Thomas was chosen as a Second Team outfielder, but also caught a few games for the Falcons this season.

Bryan VanDuser of Concordia Chicago was named the Midwest Region Player of the Year while Heath Renz of UW-Whitewater was chosen as the Pitcher of the Year. The final two major awards went to Wyatt Ulrich of St. John's, the Rookie of the Year and John Vodenlinch of UW-Whitewater, who was selected as Coach of the Year.
