WAUKESHA, Wis. – Seniors Matt Schubert and Bryan Thomas were named First Team All-Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference, highlighting the Concordia University Wisconsin Baseball program's representation as the league announced its postseason awards Thursday. The Falcons had six players honored after a 26-11 regular season, including a 15-5 mark in the NACC.
In addition to the seniors First Team honors, junior Andrew Gibbons was a Second team selection while freshman Matthew Olig (Plymouth, Wis.) was an honorable mention pick. Freshmen Seth Cox and Spencer Garnett landed on the All-Freshmen Team. Olig was ineligible for the All-Freshmen squad as the award is only for players who are one year immediately removed from high school.
Schubert (West Bend, Wis.) was a do-it-all type player for the Falcons this season, serving as the starting shortstop and also appearing as a starting pitcher six times. At the plate, Schubert led the NACC with a .475 batting average during conference games. In conference-only games, the senior ranked first in runs (32) and doubles (15) while finishing second in hits (38) and fourth in RBIs (38). On the mound, Schubert pitched a total of 39.1 innings over the entire regular season, finishing with a 4-1 record and a 3.43 ERA.
Thomas (Lowell, Ind.) served an outfielder and right fielder and was one of the top hitters in the NACC this season. As of Friday morning, Thomas ranked second in the conference with a .424 batting average and first in RBIs with 48 while appearing in all 38 games thus far. In league-only contests, Thomas hit .410 with 28 RBIs and 15 runs scored.
Gibbons (Markesan, Wis.) was one of the Falcons top arms this season throwing a team-high 52.2 innings and posting a team-best five wins. The lefty posted a 3.08 ERA and tossed three complete games. In league-only contests, Gibbons recorded a 4-0 record with a 2.86 ERA in six starts. The junior gave up just 11 earned runs in 34.2 NACC innings.
Olig (Plymouth, Wis.) worked his way into the starting rotation midway through the season and turned into one of the Falcons top arms. The rookie right-hander won four games during the regular season and picked up his fifth win in the Falcons NACC Tournament opener Thursday. In league-only games, Olig worked 27 innings and posted a 3-1 record with a 1.67 ERA.
Cox (Gilbert, Ariz.) really came on strong at the end of the season for the Falcons, throwing 16.2 consecutive scoreless frames to end the regular season, 6.2 of those coming in conference games. He finished the 2017 regular season with a 0.82 ERA in 22 innings of work, allowing just three runs, two earned. Cox had a 2-0 record, one of those a conference game against Marian.
Garnett (Clarendon Hills, Ill.) made appearances at shortstop this season when Schubert toed the rubber for the Falcons. The freshman batted .387 in 12 games played. He appeared in seven conference games, batting .421 with four runs scored.
