Former Badger football star Brian Calhoun helps CUW http://cuwfalcons.athleticsite.com/article.asp?articleID=2416

MEQUON, Wis. -- Former University of Wisconsin-Madison Badger running back Brian Calhoun was in attendance shadowing drills during Concordia University Wisconsin's final spring practice session on Saturday.

"Brian's significant gross of achievements as a former athlete, accompanied by his empowering ability to strengthen morale and build accountability into the minds of not only our student-athletes, but everyone that surrounds him, is the sole purpose for inviting him to our practice," explained running backs coach Andrew Gorniak.

Calhoun achieved numerous honors playing high school football track and field at Oak Creek High School, rushing for over 5,000 yards and scoring 82 touchdowns in high school. He was named the Gatorade State Player of the Year, earned First Team All-State honors, and was ranked as the nation’s 12th best running back by Rivals.com.

After playing football at Colorado University for his freshman (2002) and sophomore (2003) years, Calhoun decided to return home and attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison. During his two years at Colorado, Calhoun was named the ABC Player of the Game against Nebraska University in 2002 and again against Florida State in 2003.

Calhoun enjoyed a fantastic 2005 with the Badgers by leading the nation with 348 rushing touches for 1,636 yards and 53 receiving touches for 571 yards. He finished with 22 rushing and 2 receiving touchdowns. His 22 rushing touchdowns were a school record. In addition, his 2,207 all purpose yards, ranks 2nd in school history. Calhoun became the 2nd player in Big Ten history with 1,000 rushing and 500 receiving yards in one season and the 2nd player in NCAA history with 1500 yards rushing and 500 receiving yards in one a season.

Calhoun was also named the MVP of the 2006 Capital One Bowl after gaining 213 yards and scoring a touchdown in the Wisconsin Badgers victory over the Auburn Tigers. He was a third round draft choice of the Detroit Lions but had his pro career shortened by a torn ACL.

"His championship effort to elevate the attitude and create a vision for our football community on Saturday was an inspiration and a blessing," praised Gorniak. "It was great day to be a Falcon."

Corey VanGroll named CUW Wrestling head coach http://cuwfalcons.athleticsite.com/article.asp?articleID=2414

MEQUON, Wis. – Concordia University Wisconsin Director of Athletics Dr. Rob Barnhill announced Friday morning the hiring of Corey VanGroll as the new Wrestling head coach.

“I am excited to take on this new challenge,” VanGroll said. “I am happy to be back in an area I am familiar with and to be at a University that is committed to winning.”

During the past three seasons VanGroll has quickly risen up the coaching ranks in the wrestling community while at Iowa Lakes Community College. The former All-American and National Qualifier at UW-Parkside coached the Lakers to two top-10 finishes as a team at the National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association level. He also coached 10 All-Americans and Victor Dejesus, a two-time national champion.

“I am pleased to announce the addition of Corey VanGroll to our coaching staff,” Barnhill said. “His past experiences as a student-athlete and a coach, along with his ability to recruit, are a perfect combination for the position. We look forward to having a full-time wrestling coach who can advance our program to the national level and sustain success over a long period of time.”

VanGroll coached seven Academic All-Americans during his time at ILCC and helped three of his student-athletes receive scholarships at NCAA Division I wrestling programs.

As a student-athlete at UW-Parkside he was a four-year member of the Rangers wrestling program, was twice voted team captain, and received several sportsmanship awards. VanGroll graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Fitness Management and a Minor in Sports Management at UW-Parkside prior to earning his Master’s Degree in higher education at Iowa State University this past year.

“The standards and expectations that I have for this program are high,” VanGroll said. “We already have a solid group of wrestlers here at CUW and I hope to grow the program in numbers and to also coach potential All-Americans over the next few years.”

Baseball ends season at home on Senior Day http://cuwfalcons.athleticsite.com/article.asp?articleID=2411

Box Score: UW-W 11, CUW 8

MEQUON, Wis. – Concordia University Wisconsin dropped an 11-8 non-conference baseball contest against UW-Whitewater at Kapco Park on Tuesday afternoon to conclude the 2012 campaign.

CUW (13-24) scored at least one run in six different innings during SENIOR DAY and outhit UW-W 15-11 in the contest, but four costly errors didn’t help in the end. The Warhawks plated nine runs during the second and third innings to take a commanding lead, one that was too large to overcome for the Falcons.

The Falcons’ 2012 senior class had eight members and they all saw action in the game. Seniors Austin Sarauer (Campbellsport, Wis.) and Adam Martz (West Bend, Wis.) each had three hits and scored a combined five runs.

Sophomore Harry Steldt (West Bend, Wis.) led all players with a game-high four base hits, while driving in two and scoring once. Sophomore Andrew Mueller (Horicon, Wis.) was given the loss after giving up five hits and allowing nine runs, four earned.

A trio of UW-W (27-13) players recorded two hits and Brandon Egnarski scored a team-best three times. Aaron Leitner (3-2) earned the win on the mound in relief after throwing two innings. He struck out two, allowed four hits and gave up two runs, one earned.

CUW lit up the scoreboard first with back-to-back home runs by Sarauer and Steldt in the opening frame. It was the first time in Kapco Park history that back-to-back home runs were hit.

UW-W answered with four runs in the second and five in the fifth to take a 9-2 lead. The Warhawks benefited from two hit-by-pitches, three errors and two walks by the Falcons. They also recorded three singles, a double and a stolen base in the two frames.

Junior Daniel Mueller (West Bend, Wis.) drove in his only run of the game on a single to right field, which scored Sarauer from third to make the score 9-3 after three innings of play.

CUW scored a run in each of the next three innings while UW-W plated a run in the fifth off a double to hold a 10-6 advantage at the end of six frames.

The Warhawks pushed their advantage to 11-6 after Mike Mierow ripped a RBI double down the left field line.

CUW scored its final runs of the ballgame on a Martz double to right field scoring pinch runner Austin Baglow (sophomore, Walled Lake, Mich.), before Martz later scored on a wild pitch.
