Wartburg's Record-Setting 2012 Sweetened by Scholar Team of the Year Nods

July 26, 2012

NEW ORLEANS – The women's track & field team at Wartburg College was named Scholar Team of the Year in Division III for the both indoor and outdoor 2012 seasons by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The squads earned the distinction as a result of being the highest-placing teams with at least a 3.10-cumulative GPA at the most recent NCAA indoor and outdoor championship, respectively. In addition, the USTFCCCA announced 137 teams as All-Academic teams for the track & field seasons.

Indoor Track & Field Scholar Team of the Year – Wartburg
Outdoor Track & Field Scholar Team of the Year – Wartburg

A sweep of Scholar Team of the Year honors caps a near-perfect track & field year for Wartburg College of Waverly, Iowa. The Knights swept NCAA indoor and outdoor track & field titles for the first time since 2009 and tallied all-time scoring records for most team points in the championships (modern scoring system).

Wartburg scored 99 points and had four event champions to best UW-Oshkosh's 48 to capture their third NCAA indoor crown in four years. Outdoors, the team scored 129 points and had five champs to best the field by 77 points.

Earlier in the week, Laura Sigmund and Alana Enabnit were named National Scholar Athletes of the Year for the indoor and outdoor season, respectively. Sigmund was the national champion indoors in the 5000 meters. Enabnit, just a freshman, swept the 5000 and 10,000 meters at the outdoor championships.

Sigmund and Enabnit were among the 12 Knights that were named as All-Academic individuals yesterday.
