Women's Tennis falls to Edgewood, defeats Rockford in NAC action

MEQUON, Wis. – In a battle of two of last fall's Northern Athletics Conference women's tennis tri-champions it was Edgewood College that pulled out a 7-2 victory over Concordia University Wisconsin on Saturday at North Shore Country Club.

The Falcons responded in the afternoon with a shutout 9-0 win over Rockford College to finish 1-1 for the day.

CUW's Julie Spransy (senior, Brown Deer, Wis.) and Jaclyn Ward (senior, Franklin, Wis.) edged out an 8-6 win to claim the team's only doubles point against Edgewood. During the morning's singles competition it was all Eagles, expect for Ward's 7-5, 6-1 singles victory for the Falcons.

"Our No. 1 doubles team stepped up their game and took it to Edgewood," head coach Steven Anschutz said. "Jaclyn Ward played a great match at No. 2 singles and conveyed 100 percent confidence during her entire match to beat her opponent. This was a good match for us to learn from and we will be changing our practice regime because of it. I think each individual player now knows what it takes to compete hard in this conference and what we all need to do individually to compete and win a championship."

CUW (4-1, 4-1 NAC) answered in the afternoon with its third shutout win of the season. The Falcons lost just four games in doubles play and four during the singles portion of the competition. Junior Kristine Weber (Rochester Hills, Mich.) and senior Callie Reinke (West Allis, Wis.) won 8-0 in doubles play. Sophomore Emily McCormick (Waukesha, Wis.), freshman Amanda Ropiak (Franklin, Wis.) and freshman Taylor Rescycnski (Greenfield, Wis.) all won their singles matches 6-0, 6-0.

"I was happy to try and give some players new opportunities in this match to prove themselves in different ways," Anschutz said. "They impressed me beyond what I had thought. Taylor showed how much work and effort she has put in the first few weeks of the season. Everyone played great."

CUW returns to action with three straight NAC matches beginning on Tuesday at Alverno College.
