CUW Women’s tennis picked for second by coaches
WAUKESHA, Wis. -- The Northern Athletics Conference announced its 2011-12 women's tennis preseason coaches' poll and last season's co-champions split the first-place votes, yet it was Edgewood that was picked to win the title.
Edgewood secured six of the 12 first-place votes for 135 poll points, just ahead of its co-champions from last season. The Eagles (17-12, 10-1) secured the top seed in last season's team tournament, and captured a pair of victories to propel them to the NCAA III Championship Tournament for the third straight season.
Concordia Wisconsin (11-4, 10-1) and Benedictine (12-6, 10-1), also co-champs last season, received three first-place votes apiece, but the Falcons were tabbed second in the poll with 130 points and BenU was third with 123.
Aurora (9-4, 8-3) was fourth with 98 points, followed by Concordia Chicago (6-9, 6-5) and Dominican (7-11, 5-6). The complete preseason poll is available below.
Teams start the season early next week and conference play opens on Sept. 3. The conference regular season wraps up this fall, and the top six teams qualify for the conference team tournament. The winner of the team tournament, which takes place in the spring, receives the league's automatic bid to the NCAA III Championship Tournament.
