Wrestling overwhelms opposition at NWA Tournament

MILWAUKEE – Concordia University Wisconsin dominated the Northern Wrestling Association Tournament by winning six of the 10 weight brackets on Saturday inside the Kern Center.

CUW took first with 103.5 team points, while Sean Ambrocio was named NWA Outstanding Wrestler and Corey VanGroll was named NWA Coach of the Year for the second-straight time.

Overall, the Falcons earned five wins by fall, two by technical fall, five by major decision, 10 by decision and one by the second tiebreaker.

Ambrocio (junior, San Antonio, Texas) breezed through the 125-pound weight bracket with a win by fall in eight seconds over Matt Sugai (Knox College). The victory was one second short of tying the program record. He then defeated Matt Damp (Lakeland College) by technical fall, 22-5, for the title. It was also the third-consecutive year Ambrocio has won the NWA 125-pound title.

Senior Marcus Lubner (Fredonia, Wis.) won two bouts to take the 133-pound trophy. He earned a major decision, 12-2, win over Grant Fronson (Lakeland College) before taking the title bout by major decision, 20-9, over Eduardo Orihuela (Lakeland College). It was also the third time Lubner has won the NWA 133-pound championship.

Sophomore Pierce Holtfreter (Las Vegas, Nev.) won three bouts in the 157-pound bracket to take the championship. He first defeated Richard Warren (Maranatha Baptist Bible College) by fall in 4:14 before earned a 6-5 decision win against Dallas Schrug (MSOE). He blew past Sean Sarkauskas (MSOE) with a technical fall, 16-0, victory before defeating Kyle Heller (Knox College) by major decision, 17-8. The title bout was his most difficult, as he needed the second 30-second tiebreaker to defeat Mitchell Fucile (Lakeland College). It was also Kenealy's second-consecutive NWA 165-pound title.

Senior Leonard Kuspa (Oak Forest, Ill.) won his first NWA 174-pound championship. He pinned Ryan Lambert (Knox College) in two minutes and 16 seconds before earning a 6-3 decision victory against Russell Carey (MSOE).
