STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Jake Reuteler took second place in the 197 pound bracket at the Pointer Open, hosted by UW-Stevens Point, on Saturday and Concordia University Wisconsin's Wrestling team performed well to begin the 2013-14 season.
The Falcons had seven wrestlers finish in the top six places of their respective weight divisions at the difficult tournament.
Reuteler (junior, New Berlin, Wis.) led CUW with a second place finish in the 197 pound weight bracket after earning four victories. He defeated Steve Asmondy (UW-Stevens Point) by major decision (14-5) to earn his medal. Reuteler also defeated Michael Berg (UW-Oshkosh) by fall (1:11), Luke Ortscheid (UW-Eau Claire) by decision (3-1) and Jay Howarth (UW-Oshkosh) by decision (15-11) throughout the day.
Junior Casey Kenealy (Hartford, Wis.) began his season with a third place finish in the 165 pound bracket. He defeated Ben Thome (UW-Steven Point) for the second time by decision (5-0) to end his day. Kenealy also defeated Ryan Behnke (UW-Eau Claire) by decision (9-5) and Thome by major decision (10-0)
Freshman Mason Mergener (Crivitz, Wis.) began his career with a fourth place finish in the 157 pound division. He defeated Logan Hermsen (UW-Stevens Point) by decision (7-5), Zach Noel (UW-Parkside) by decision (7-0) and Matt Koch (UW-Eau Claire) by fall (3:55).
Senior Marcus Lubner (Fredonia, Wis.) took fifth at 141 pounds, senior Leonard Kuspa (Oak Forest, Ill.) was fifth in the 174 pound division and senior Seth Kilkelly (Barneveld, Wis.) earned fifth place honors in the 285 pound bracket.
Lubner defeated Travis Oliphant (UW-Eau Claire) by fall (1:57), Joe Pelkey (UW-Oshkosh) by decision (11-4) and Ed Watts (Itasca) by fall (0:43). Kuspa earned victories over Andy Borchardt (UW-Stevens Point) by injury default, Mac Braylock (CUW) by major decision (13-4) and Jake Ludovissie (Itasca) by technical fall (16-0). Kilkelly won twice over Justin Peper (Itasca) by major decision (13-5) and Justin Karkula (UW-Eau Claire) by decision (9-6).
Junior Greg Sanders (San Antonio, Texas) was sixth in the 149 pound bracket after winning twice. He defeated Brandt Welcher (UW-Parkside) by decision (9-3) and Abe Anderson (Central) by major decision (16-4).
CUW returns to the mat on Wednesday for a dual at UW-Stevens Point at 7 p.m. The Pointers finished the 2012-13 season ranked No. 22 by the National Wrestling Coaches Association.
