Balanced scoring leads Women's Lacrosse to victory at Aurora
AURORA, Ill. – Concordia University Wisconsin had five players score a pair of goals and used a commanding first half to earn a 12-6 victory at Aurora University on Tuesday afternoon at Vago Field.
The Falcons jumped out a 5-0 advantage less than seven minutes into the Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference matchup and extended their lead to as many as eight goals early in the second half. Statistics were close in many categories, but favored CUW in shots (24-15), ground balls (31-30) and clears (16-10).
A pair of CUW midfielders – freshman Jenna Brown (Roseville, Minn.) and sophomore Hayley Peppers (Franktown, Colo.) – tallied their first career goals. Sophomore Sammi Reiter (Stillwater, Minn.), sophomore Hannah Redden (Libertyville, Ill.), sophomore Emily Heckendorf (Merrill, Wis.) and senior Erin Lau (Cary, Ill.) each found the back of the net twice.
Reiter also grabbed a game-high seven ground balls and won four draw controls, while Heckendorf finished with six ground balls and four draw control wins.
Rachel Cochran led all players with three goals. Christy Savellano added two goals and Kaitlyn Cochran recorded five ground balls for AU (1-7, 0-2 MWLC). The Spartans, in their first season of NCAA Division III competition, hung with the Falcons in the second half matching them shot for shot and picking up nearly as many ground balls.
One downside for CUW was its season-high-tying 24 turnovers, three of which were caused by AU.
The Falcons return to action on Wednesday with a 7:30 p.m. MWLC game at Augustana College.
