WAUKESHA, Wis. – Concordia University Wisconsin freshman forward Veronika Metanova has been named to the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association All-Freshman Team as the league announced its postseason awards Thursday.
Metanova (Palatine, Ill.) becomes just the second Falcon to receive All-Freshman accolades. The first year of All-Freshman team was in 2010-11 and Emily Heckendorf became the first CUW player to be selected in 2011-12.
Metanova had a strong first season with the Falcons, leading the team in points (20) and goals (9). She also was second on the team with 11 assists. The freshman scored 16 of her 20 points during the conference season (18 games). She recorded six goals and added 10 assists during conference play.
Five other players joined Metanova on the All-Freshman Team, including NCHA Freshman of the Year Kristin Lewicki from Adrian College. Isabel Waidacher from College of St. Scholastica was the third forward chosen, while the Saints goalie Lindsey Hartfiel was also selected. Rounding out the team were defensemen Megan Crandell of St. Norbert College and Lexie Tzafaroglou of Adrian.
The Falcons concluded their 2013-14 season with an 8-16-4 record, falling 6-5 in overtime against Adrian College in the Slaats Cup Playoffs First Round. The semifinals and finals of the playoffs will take place this weekend, with the winner earning the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Lake Forest College will host St. Scholastica, St. Norbert and Adrian for this weekend's games.
