Heckendorf's program record garners NCHA weekly award

WAUKESHA, Wis. – Junior defenseman Emily Heckendorf was named the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Defensive Player of the Week for the events of December 30-January 5, the league announced Tuesday.

Heckendorf (Merill, Wis.) set a Falcons record by scoring four points in the third period of a 6-5 loss against Saint Benedict on Saturday. She nearly led CUW back from three goals down by scoring two power play goals and adding two assists over the final 20 minutes of play. Heckendorf now leads CUW with 11 points, having scored five goals and adding six assists this season. The previous record for most points in a period for CUW was three, which was done on multiple occassions.

The junior also played a key defensive role in a 3-1 win over Saint Benedict on Friday night. She has made the adjustment to defense look easy after switching over from a forward position earlier this season.

Heckendorf and the Falcons will play three non-conference road games this week beginning with a Thursday matchup against Concordia College Moorhead. CUW will then face Hamline University Saturday before battling with St. Catherine on Sunday.
