Lake Forest completes weekend sweep of Women's Hockey
LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Melissa Paluch scored a hat trick to lead Lake Forest College to a weekend series sweep over Concordia University Wisconsin's Women's Hockey team. The Foresters scored the game's first eight goals, downing the Falcons, 8-1.
Much like Friday night, CUW and Lake Forest played evenly through the opening part of the first period, as LFC didn't build a 1-0 lead until there was 4:01 left in the first. Paluch scored her first goal of the game at that point and the Foresters added another score with just nine seconds remaining in the opening stanza, taking a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
Lake Forest used the momentum of scoring late in the first period to control the second 20 minutes of play. The Foresters struck four times in the second, two of those goals coming from Morgan Pope, building a 6-0 lead heading into the final stanza.
Paluch finished off her hat trick in the third period and Lake Forest went up 8-0 before the Falcons broke their scoreless streak during the final minute of play. Freshman Veronika Metanova (Palatine, Ill.) scored her first collegiate goal with 59 seconds left off an assist from freshman Baylee Darling (Holmen, Wis.).
Junior Jennifer DeGeorge (Waukesha, Wis.) and freshman Bridget Slater (Roseau, Minn.) split time in goal for the Falcons. DeGeorge finished with 27 saves, while Slater made 20 in her collegiate debut. Casey Hartfiel totaled 15 saves for Lake Forest.
Special teams also played a factor in the NCHA contest as Lake Forest finished the afternoon 3-for-4 on the power play. CUW had just one chance with an extra skater and were unable to convert that opportunity into a goal.
The Falcons will return to action Thursday night when they host Marian University in NCHA action. Puck is set to drop at 7 p.m. at the Ozaukee Ice Center.
