Softball opens season with pair of losses at dome tournament
MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Softball team opened its season with a pair of losses at the Finlandia Dome Tournament Saturday. CUW was defeated 5-0 by Simpson College in the opener before dropping a 5-4 game against UW-Superior.
Defense ultimately doomed the Falcons as they committed 12 errors over the two games, including seven against UW-Superior. In the 5-4 loss the Yellowjackets scored two runs in the top of the seventh, rallying for the one-run win.
Freshman Jennifer Reicher (Kewaskum, Wis.) had a strong second game for CUW as she went 2-for-3, including belting a two-run home run in the first inning. The Falcons scored all four runs in the first against UW-Superior, which included an RBI double from senior Alyssa Robison (Roselle, Ill.).
The four-run first came after UW-Superior scored three runs in the top of the frame. Kristen Haider homered for the Yellowjackets in the top of the first as she finished with a game-high three hits. UWS won the game in the top of the seventh on an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Taylor Johnson.
Adding two hits for the Falcons was freshman Sophia Kiela (Plymouth, Wis.). She was one of four freshmen to have a two-hit game as the duo of Alexis Holsten (Oshkosh, Wis.) and Marisa Hahn (Northville, Mich.) accounted for all four of the Falcons hits in the opening game against Simpson.
Simpson's Kaytlyn Ernst was in control as she threw a complete game four-hitter. Ernst struck out 10 batters. Sophomore Melissa Perkins (Park Forest, Ill.) allowed just three earned in her six innings, striking out two. Junior Felicia Meyer (Lewiston, Minn.) made her Falcons debut in game two, throwing 6.1 innings and striking out two. Perkins finished the game, throwing the final two-thirds of an inning.
CUW (0-2) will return to action tomorrow when they take on Mount Mary College and Carroll University. The opening game is at 10:30 a.m. CST and a live video link is available at CUWFalcons.com courtesy of the Finlandia sports information department.
