FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. – Competing against a very difficult field, the Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Cross Country team ran to a ninth-place finish at the Roy Griak Invitational Saturday. The meet is hosted by the University of Minnesota, and is run at Les Bolstad Golf Course.
The race was run in hot weather, which according to head coach Russ DeLap had a big effect on everyone racing. Overall there were 17 Division III teams at the meet, including several strong programs across the Midwest.
Senior Robert Meilbeck (Winthrop Harbor, Ill.) was the top Falcons runner Saturday, completing the 8K race in a time of 28:52.1, his best ever at the Roy Griak meet. Following Meilbeck was sophomore Michael Taylor (Denmark, Wis.) as he recorded a time of 29:09.4, about a minute faster than he ran a season ago at this meet.
"Our times today were slower than anticipated, but the weather was not conducive to running fast times," said DeLap about the men's performance today.
Rounding out the scoring lineup for the Falcons was the trio of junior Alex Rosenau, freshman Tyler Neuwirth and junior Johann Hinck. Rosenau (Van Dyne, Wis.) ran a 30:07.8, while Neuwirth (Mukwonago, Wis.) finished the race in 30:16.3. Hinck (Cedarburg, Wis.) completed the course in a time of 30:31.2.
Freshman Tanner Rutkowski (Wauwatosa, Wis.) ran his first collegiate 8K and was the seventh Falcons runner to finish the race. Sophomore Zach Ziemann (Jackson, Wis.) also had a strong day, running his top time on the course by 45 seconds.
CUW will have next weekend off before running at the Benedictine Invite October 10. The men's race will be at 4:45 p.m., following the women's race which is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start.
