WATERTOWN, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Men's and Women's Cross Country teams opened the season up with a dual meet against Maranatha Baptist University on Saturday. Both the men's and women's team won their meets in dominating fashion.
The CUW Men placed 12 out of the top 13 runners, including freshman Tanner Rutkowski (Wauwatosa, Wis.) won the two-mile race, completing the course in a time of 10:32.6. He led a strong group of Falcons runners as they had the top five, scoring 15 team points.
Sophomore Michael Taylor (Denmark, Wis.) ran a 10:39.5 for a second-place finish, while senior Robert Meilbeck (Winthrop Harbor, Ill.) ran a 10:43.6, finishing in third. Juniors Johann Hinck (Cedarburg, Wis.) and Alex Rosenau (Van Dyne, Wis.) finished fourth and fifth, respectively with times of 10:45.7 and 10:56.3.
In the women's race freshman Bethany Coop (Mora, Minn.) made a strong debut, winning the race in a time of 12:26.1. CUW had 18 of the top 20 finishers and scored 17 points, easily downing the Sabercats.
Sophomore Ashley Scheele (Kohler, Wis.) finished second, running a 12:39.7, while junior Larissa Schlitz (DeForest, Wis.) ran well in her return from injury that cost her the entire 2013 season. Schiltz finished third, running a 12:45.8.
Rounding out the scoring lineup for the CUW Women were freshmen Cassandra Sprotte (Abbotsford, Wis.) and Nora Imperl (Greenfield, Wis.). The duo ran times of 13:09.1 and 13:10.0 in their first collegiate races.
The Falcons will be back in action Saturday, September 13 when they host the Falcon Invitational. The meet, which is run on the campus of CUW, is set for an 11 a.m. start for the men, with the women following at noon.
