HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Following a pair of losses to begin its spring trip, the Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Tennis team got back on track Wednesday with a 9-0 win over Hartwick College in South Carolina.
The Falcons were dominant in both singles and doubles play against the Hawks. CUW did not drop a set in six singles matches and won five of those 12 sets by 6-0 scores. CUW also cruised in doubles play, winning two of three matches by 8-1 scores and the other by an 8-3 count.
Senior Russell Johnson (Monticello, Minn.) got the Falcons going by not dropping a point, picking up a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles. Junior Robert Spiering (Wauwatosa, Wis.) also did not lose a point in a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles.
The closest singles match came at the No.3 position where senior Tanner Hahn (Reedsburg, Wis.) picked up a 6-4, 6-4 victory. Senior Skip Turner (Eau Claire, Wis.) won his No. 2 doubles match by a 6-2, 6-3 score, while junior Benjamin Nommensen (Waupaca, Wis.) scored a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles. Senior Garrett Wells (Aurora, Ill.) was also victorious, gaining a 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 5 spot.
Johnson and Turner paired together at No. 1 doubles and won the closest of the three matches by an 8-3 score. The teams of Wells/Nommensen/ and Hahn/Spiering rolled to 8-1 wins at No. 2 and 3 doubles, respectively.
CUW (2-8) will return to the Beach and Tennis Courts tomorrow morning where they will take on Carleton College at 7:30 a.m. CST.
