Hartford, Wisconsin -
The Concordia men's golf team finished tied for 12th out of 15, above Marian and Rockford, at the WLC Invitational from the Washington County Golf Course in Hartford, Wisconsin.
Jon Wengel shot an 81 and 85 for an invite score of 166, which placed him tied for 36th. Phil Waara tied for 46th, finishing with scores of 83 and 88 and a total of 171.
"It looked as if we had turned the corner, said Coach Ray Engelking. "We finished strong the first day. The next day was surrealistic. We had our golfers hitting 59' wedges from 145 yds, drivers 400+ with the wind. Against the wind, it was two hundred yd. drives, and who knows what to hit from there? When you were on the green, a stopped putt would all of a sudden roll back 10 feet (60 mph gusts). These were the worst conditions we have ever experienced! Our course management let us down. I expected it with freshman, but ..."
The next two tournaments for CUW are what counts for conference. "I am hoping that we have grown from our experience and that we will find our potential the next two weekends," said Engelking.
Men's golf next hits the links this weekend for the MSOE Invitational.
