CUW football travels to Rockford Saturday
Mequon, Wis.- Greg Etter's Falcons (0-3) travel to Rockford (0-3) this weekend for the NAC Conference opener.
CUW will have to deal with an improved Regents offense that has accounted for 58 points in 3 non-conference losses. The Regents finished 0-10 a season ago.
Rockford quarterback Jake Gorsuch has thrown for 293 yards and a pair of TDs in those early matchups.
Anastacio Zamba has been amazing as the Regents' "go-to" receiver with 20 receptions on the season. He is averaging a remarkable 15.6 yards per catch.
Isaiah Whack leads Rockford rushers with a 70 yard per game average and an impressive 5.4 yards per carry.
Kicker Anthony Beres has already earned a pair of NAC Player of the Week honors, going 3-3 on field goals and 7-7 on extra points while compiling a 37.9 average on 17 punts.
Defense has been the early stumbling block for Saturday's hosts who have allowed an average of 45.3 points per contest.
No NAC team has been particularly impressive out of the gate so beginning the conference season with wins at Rockford and Maranatha could be key ingredients to CUW's success when they return home to battle pre-season favorite Benedictine on Oct. 15th.
Our Falcons have had turnover problems in their three non-conference losses against high-level opposition. CUW quarterback Pat Czerwiec is 34 of 68 for 277 yards, but he's already been picked off seven times. James Saunders has 10 receptions while Erik West's seven catches have accounted for the most yardage (73).
Carlton Austin leads Concordia rushers with a 4.0 average, but overall the Falcon running game is gaining only 2.1 yards per carry.
"We have played three very good teams. Now let's see what we have learned from those games," said Etter.
