RIVER FOREST, Ill. - Sophomore Andrew Mueller (Horicon, Wis.) deserved a better fate, but crucial errors gave the host Dominican Stars a pair of late unearned runs that accounted for a 2-1 win over Val Keiper's team in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.
Game two was one-sided as Dominican pitching silenced the CUW offense once again during an 8-1 Stars victory. Concordia (8-10 in league play) had only seven hits on the day.
Concordia's lone run in the initial contest came in the sixth. Freshman Matt Schroeder (Mequon, Wis.) led off the inning with a single, went to second on a sacrifce bunt, and scored on a single by senior Austin Sarauer (Campbellsport, Wis.) The Falcons actually loaded the bases with only one out in that inning, but could not get a crucial hit.
The Stars retaliated thanks to pair of CUW errors to tie the score in their half of the sixth. Chris Kemp's sacrifice fly scored the tying run after two runners reached base on misplays by Concordia infielders.
DU scored the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh, once again courtesy of a Falcon infield error that allowed a runner to get to third from where he slid home on a successful squeeze bunt.
Mueller allowed only six hits and no earned runs in his complete game effort.
This game was a scoreless pitcher's duel for four innings before Dominican scored six runs on five hits in their half of the fifth against loser Dylan Hinckley (Freshman/ West Bend, Wis.) who had allowed only one hit to that point, but saw his record fall to 0-3.
The light-hitting Falcons could not solve Cody Mueller (3-2) or reliever Zack Roszak. Senior Nick Doedens (Germantown, Wis.) was the only CUW starter to get a hit.
CUW hosts first place Concordia- Chicago Sunday in a doubleheader starting at 1:00pm.
