A lot of promise surrounds this season’s cross country team(s), especially after the women won the 2009 Northern Athletics Conference championship by five points and the men placed second by just three points. From those squads, a great deal of talent returns with the women led by NAC Runner of the Year Samantha Gries and the men led by NAC Runner of the Year Andy Ashenden.
“The 2010 outlook for Falcon cross country looks very promising,” said Head Coach Russ DeLap. “We have both conference champions back and four women’s & three men’s all – conference runners returning. With an outstanding recruiting class coming in and only losing three runners total we should have a team that should improve quite a bit.”
Besides Gries, the women also return first team all-conference selection Lindsay Wayne, and second team all-conference selections Bethany Doerr, Emily Biederwolf and Jade Senger. Coach DeLap is also very excited about his new recruits Kelsey Wagner, Kate West, Hailey Ring, Mary Rowley, Brittany Maynard, Caitlyn Stern, Maxine Blohowiak, Megan Demman, Jamie Schuh, Stephanie Kennett, Sara Wollner and Kyla Meyer.
On the men’s side, the team also returns first team all-conference selections Andrew Braun and Ben Pape and second team all-conference selections Richard Thompson and Danny Fecht. Ryan Perry, Michael Kolbach, Martin Hinze, Jordan Guenther and Thomas Helgren are among the recruits Coach DeLap is looking forward to watching compete this fall.
“I look for many of the returners to take a big step forward in their running careers as the juniors and seniors will have three and four years of consistent training behind them,” said DeLap. “The team is working hard this summer preparing for the season and as a team are excited to see what we can do this year.”
With Edgewood being the Falcons closest competition last fall, things figure to be a lot closer this season with a number of programs making great strides in their quest to compete for the titles.
“Last year the men were runners-up to Edgewood College by a mere three points and the women won conference by five points to Edgewood College,” DeLap mentioned. “Both teams from Edgewood College will be strong again and the other conference teams are continuing to get better as a whole so we have our work cut out for us in the NAC. The Falcon team is up for the challenge to go out and compete for the conference titles. It should be interesting and fun.”
