It’s been a long uphill battle, filled with many meetings and a series of votes, but on Tuesday night Concordia University received a unanimous approval from the Mequon Common Council to build a $3.5 million dollar baseball stadium. Besides its use by the Concordia baseball team, the initiative will allow for a Wooden Bat League team to also call the campus home in the summer months.
With a couple of well respected Wooden Bat Leagues calling the Midwest home, the Northwood’s League is considered one of the premiere Wooden Bat Leagues in the nation and is home to teams as close as Madison (Mallards) and Green Bay (Bullfrogs). With a franchise name and/or league affiliation yet to be determined, James Kacmarcik, President of Kapco Metal Stampings Inc. in Grafton, has already pledged $1 million to the project.
Kacmarcik would be the lead owner of the yet to be named franchise, but an additional $2.5 million is still needed to be raised if all of this is to be completed by the spring of 2011. Outside of Concordia and a Wooden Bat League franchise, the stadium could also be utilized by a number of baseball-related community events.
College students will also be given the unique opportunity to gain hands-on experiences in marketing, athletic training and other front office businesses used to run a franchise/stadium, making this a one of a kind venture. It will also benefit the Milwaukee Brewers, who would have a stadium in their backyard to visit and scout potential big league talent.
When all is said and done, the new stadium is expected to have a seating capacity of up to 2,000. The stadium will also feature lights, a press box and a public address system, making Concordia a place to be/visit when it comes to non-stop baseball excitement from the spring-fall months.
